09/12 SP Fred and George Dropped Out!
When I was thirteen years old and reading the fifth Harry Potter book I found myself shocked that Fred and George had dropped out. It was the beginning of the third act and I was on a mental high. Fred and George had just caused one of the coolest distractions of all time, but I wasn't sure how I felt about its repercussions. Why in the world would they do that? Don't they know that they can't exactly recover from that? They can still graduate once she’s gone, no need to drop out. Thing is, they didn't need to. The success of their joke shop didn't depend on their graduating from Hogwarts. I think that this is one of the major issues facing students today. Frankly, school just isn't what we need for every one of us to be successful. School has its place and teaches us very important things, but there are some students would probably be more successful if they just had more options to grow outside of a traditional school or college setting.

This is pretty bad I'm not exactly use to blog posts yet...
ReplyDeleteCollege isn't for everyone. I personally enjoy it and am grateful for my time at BYU, but in the end a university is just one format for teaching and learning. The important thing is that people be committed to educating and improving themselves however they choose to do so.
ReplyDeleteThe undergraduate degree has become, essentially, a professional hoop that must be jumped through in order to stand out to your employers. Moreover, some of the most successful engineers that I've ever met (or heard of) always end up dropping out of school. I'm not saying that education is entirely useless, but I agree that working as a professional will teach you many things that an undergrad degree will not.
ReplyDeleteI like the perspective that school isn't about learning a career. It's about learning to jump through hoops and work with people. We might not like hoops, and it would certainly be nice if school prepared us better for careers, but what we learn in school helps us in other ways.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the other comments, unfortunately school doesn't do as much in-field training as we would like but it helps us stand out and learn other skills that can help us in our careers.
ReplyDeleteI think that school should not be the only path. Every individuals are different and they learn in different ways. I know that I benefit more from working along someone that knows the ropes than being handed a book. I agree with Zygoth in that we need to be committed to educating ourselves
ReplyDeleteI think school is just fine. To be frank, I feel like school is excatly what most people need. Sadly, most people dont have the motivation or the ideas to just go and do whatever they want and be successful. Some people have the drive and no idea, others have an idea, with no direction or drive. School is great for the majority. Sure, you hear about all these people who drop out and become successful, but they do it because of an idea, and a very strong desire that leads them to do anything necessary. Out of all the people who drop out of school, or leave school to do something else, only a very small percentage of them represent those who go on to do something successful. School may not be the best system out there, but if we look at its track record, it does very well.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I have learned just as much from my on-campus programming job as I have in school, but both have made me into the person I am, and I wouldn't trade either for the other.
